Fashion Stylist Career Tips

Well here we go again searching for ideas on what to write about for one of my more difficult subject to write about. I was reading all the fashion headlines lately and all the buzz about the NY fashion show when I saw the term fashion stylist used. I originally just kind of glazed over the term thinking that was just another way to refer to a fashion designer. Something in me thought that there was a bit more to it after reading a little further along in the article to realize the a fashion stylist is much different than an actual fashion designer.

So for those of you that may have an interest in being a fashion stylist and what it may involve to pursue that as a career than read on because I tracked down some useful information for you. First things first is that if you were like me and thought that when someone talked about being a fashion stylist that they were the designer of the fashions than you were wrong just as I was. Hey, I can admit when I am wrong especially when I get to learn something new ;-)

So what the heck is a fashion stylist? Well from all the fashion resources that I found on the subject of a career as a fashion stylist (thanks Google!) this is the person that coordinates the clothes, color, props and over all look of events, ads, videos, TV and commercials among other things. As a side not some other aspects of a career as a fashion stylist seem to include working with celebrities and their appearances at events, I’m guessing that you are really established in the fashion world to reach that level of clientele.

OK the next logical step when looking at the ins and outs of a fashion stylists is what sort of education background do you need to break into the business. Well as it turns out there does not seem to be a standard form of education for this field obviously if you happen to be attending a school of fashion that will work in your favor but it does not appear to be a requirement that those in the business of fashion are looking for.

Most of the fashion resources that I looked at regarding breaking into the fashion stylist business is that you need to cut your teeth per say as an intern. No matter what they may call it in your area either an intern, apprentice or assistant the best and most proficient way to break into the fashion stylist business to go work for one. Expect to be at this level for a few years at best unless of course you are the most gifted fashion stylist that the world has ever seen ;-)

Now some of the other skills that seem to be frequent talking points at all the fashion resources I went through ( oh thanks again Google!) The number one skill that seem to come up at each fashion site that I checked was how resourceful you are at networking. Gathering up the right contacts and building a reputation as a go getter seems to be the main purpose of being an apprentice to a fashion stylist.

As big of a piece of the pie that networking seems to be there are quite a few other skills that repeatedly came up when doing the research for this post. You need to have that all seeing eye for style of course but you also need to understand and be able to identify the history of fashion. A key aspect that was also indicated more than a few times would be your ability to see the hot trends in the fashion world before they reach their peak. Stay ahead of the curve if you will, I guess that advice goes for any career that you may pursue even if it’s not in fashion.

Now some of you may not like this next aspect of being a fashion stylist on the other hand for those of you that may have a bit of the entrepreneurs spirit in you then you may be excited to learn that most successful fashion stylists are independent business owners. Meaning they are self employed or to put it another way they are very business savvy. So it may be in your best interest to get some financial and business management skills under your belt as well.

All in all when you look at the fashion resources that are available on the internet most of it will tell you that there is no set path and that to be a successful fashion stylist you are going to need determination in blazing your own trail to the top of the fashion stylist world. For those of you that may get all caught up in the prospect of working with famous clients or on TV and movies being a fashion stylist is not all glitz and glamor. More often than not it’s a lot of long hours and hard days with little to no relation to the glamor or the glitz that you may be dreaming in your head.

Please don’t take my word for it though during my extensive research I did manage to find a few pages that discussed the daily ins and outs of being a fashion stylist. So in the interest of being fair and not wanting to leave you hanging for more information(wow you read this all the way to the end? must have been a slow day at the office ;-) ) here is a link to a few articles about a day in the life of being a fashion stylist, enjoy!
