The biggest fashion news that I saw this week was an announcement by Vera Wang that she will not be representing at the big fashion week in New York in Feb of 2009. Yet another indication of how deep the economical recession is reaching into every business no matter the sector. Just goes to show that even in the fashion industry even the big names are not impervious to the pressures of a down economy.
In her announcement she did state that she will still be holding an event albeit a low key event and I am sure a much cheaper event as well. It seems that putting on one of those displays at the fashion shows can run the designers quite a bit of money. Money that is not exactly a given to be made up once your stuff hits the runway, as with any designer that does a fashion show it’s a calculated risk. A risk that if the media and vendors don’t get wowed by what you are putting on can put your business in a big hole.
So I am sure that by the time the big fashion show in NY gets closer to it’s premier week that we may be seeing more headlines of top name designers that are by passing the big productions this year. In favor of holding onto their money or finding smaller less expensive ways of getting their product out to market.
I would not be surprised if we don’t start seeing fashion designer “YouTube” channels or some other form of internet marketing tool to get their latest fashion ideas out to the general public. Hmmm…. fashion designers viral marketing campaigns? Why not it works for everything else on the internet.
